Rene Herbst 'Sandow' Chairs
Rene Herbst 'Sandow' Chairs
Designed in the late 1920's, the Sandows chairs by René Herbst feature a Nickel-plated steel tube frame and bungee cords stretched taut and fastened to the frame by hooks for both the seat and back rest.
The chairs were first shown to the public at the Paris Salon d'Automne des Artistes Decorateurs in 1929. The design was inspired by bungee cords which were used at the time for wrapping parcels.
René Herbst was a French furniture designer and architect, best remembered for his advocacy of the industrialisation of furniture as a form of modern art.
