Art Nouveau Armchair by Gustav Siegel/Otto Wagner for Mundus

Art Nouveau Armchair by Gustav Siegel/Otto Wagner for Mundus
Around 1890, a new art movement emerged—called Jugendstil in Germany and Art Nouveau elsewhere. Early works featured nature-inspired abstract lines, later replaced by geometric patterns.
Though short-lived, Art Nouveau paved the way for modernism by harmonising art with everyday life, emphasising practical "applied" art over traditional painting and sculpture.
Gustav Siegel, who studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts and with Prof. Josef Hoffmann, was hired as chief designer by Jacob & Josef Kohn. His design for a low-backed armchair, inspired by an 18th-century model, became the pilot model for the Classic series and influenced the era’s bentwood furniture style.
A unique find, the armchair’s design blends elements of Otto Wagner’s model 714 and Mundus model 619F (In 1914 Mundus merged with J. & J. Kohn, and in 1922 with Gebrüder Thonet)
